the physical trace of a memory

PV 4 July, 6 - 8pm

I/N EXHIBIT presents the physical trace of a memory, its inaugural group exhibition investigating the memories an object and image can hold. Through materiality, mark-making and the presence of the viewer, the works prompt a recollection that evokes a sense of intimacy and nostalgia.

The works bring unique perspectives on how objects and images serve as vessels for memory. Each work is encoded through subject, mark-making and material that engages viewers in a dialogue about the past, triggering recollections that resonate on both emotional and intellectual levels. In the detail of mark-making,  each stroke and impression serves as a testament to the passage of time. These marks, whether deliberate or incidental, map out a history that is both personal and universal – capturing fleeting moments and preserving them within the physicality of the artwork. In many works, the subject or figure is obscured and abstracted, and yet there is recognisable gestalt quality that is completed by the viewer’s memories and associations. This dynamic exchange between the artwork and the viewer reflects the fluid nature of memory, illustrating how personal experiences shape and are shaped by external stimuli.

the physical trace of a memory offers a meditation on intimacy and nostalgia, exploring the ways art can capture and convey the essence of memory and make the act of remembering a shared experience. As viewers navigate around the works, the gallery transforms into a space where time is both fluid and tangible.
